FCPA Joe Gichuki

Joe is the Chief Executive Office of Kawai Consulting Limited and Managing Partner, J G Associates, Certified Public Accountants of Kenya. His LinkedIn profile is here.
Joe has over 35 years experience in audit, accounting, financial consulting forensic investigations, management consulting, executive outsourcing and training. He has been a long term leader of technical excellence within the profession and in various places of work.
He has lengthy exposure to public policy, development partners, and public sector assignments involving local government. He has also served as a leader in IT administration and has directed implementation of moderately complex to complex IT projects. Joe has received XBRL Foundation certification.
A popular facilitator at professional events and training seminars in the region, he was previously a partner with PKF Kenya with responsibility as Regional Head of Technical and Training In addition to his audit role. He was also Head of IT. He has also served as senior manager and partner in Deloitte and Githongo & Company respectively.
Joe serves on the boards of other companies and not-for-profit entities as well. When he isn’t doing client work, Joe can be found singing with the Lavington United Church choir which he leads.
Sam Hartwell
Position: SoProCFO Partner & US Liaison
Sam holds an MBA from Yale, with a focus in finance and operations, and an undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College. He brings more than 35 years of professional experience, including in a Fortune 500 public company, a turnaround in green tech, venture-backed startups, and international nonprofits. He has served as President, CFO, VP, Treasurer, and consultant. He is now CFO & Founding Partner at SoProCFO in Oakland California, where he provides outsourced CFO and accounting services to high-growth social enterprises. Altogether, Sam has held top financial leadership posts for the past twenty years. He was previously CFO at KickStart International and at Aid to Artisans.
In his liaison role, Sam has co-led Kawai assignments in management, IT, and CFO consulting, where he acted as a bridge between Kawai and its clients in North America and Europe.
Dorris Tochiu
Position: Manager
Dorris is an experienced ACCA trained consultant and auditor and is the holder of a B. Com (finance option) degree from the University of Nairobi. She has a long track record of making sure that assignments are carried out to the highest professional and regulatory standards.
Whilst her key experience is in finance and external audit she has also provided CFO services to a wide range of international clients in partnership with our affiliated organisation, Soprocfo and has been supporting clients in Kenya, Ethiopia, India, the UK and the US. She oversees the work of the consultants and is responsible for ensuring prompt response to client enquiries.
Dorris also carries out diagnostic review work for our clients and can assist them in making assessments of their organisational strengths and weaknesses and making suggestions about how to strengthen financial and accounting controls.
Dorris has previously worked for Deloitte, RSM, PKF and other large financial services firms in Kenya.
Dorris also serves as a volunteer and is Chair of – Turkana mission activities by Parklands Baptist Church. She also runs a street families feeding programme via DTI education Support foundation
Wambui Munene
Position: Senior Associate Consultant
She is an accounting, finance and management professional with over 20 years’ experience in financial systems implementation and evaluations, financial analysis, project management, business planning and financial modelling, fundraising/grant management, risk management and strategy formulation.
Wambui has been the senior team director on many of our assignments across four continents helping our clients to define their financial systems needs, set up or re-design their systems, refine their business models and develop the right metrics appropriate to report on their growth, and get them ‘investor ready’.
Wambui also runs ICFO Advisory working with social impact organizations to provide Accounting and CFO services.
She has previously worked as Director of Finance and Operations at Aidspan, a US registered Kenyan based not-for-profit organisation, Risk Manager at Safaricom, a Vodafone company and leading mobile operator in East Africa and CFO for Kenyan telecom start-up, Flashcom among others.
Winston Muriuki
Position: Associate Consultant: Audit
Winston is the holder of a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the Catholic University of East Africa and has fully completed his CPA studies.
Winston has over 15 years’ in audit and financial management in professional firms, the hospitality industry and cement manufacturing.
His work includes helping clients develop fireproof internal control practices and minimise enterprise risk. He is also responsible for managing company internal audit functions and providing input to board audit committees on trends, areas needing strengthening, and how to respond to fraud.
He has served clients in East Africa.
Francis Odhiambo
Position: Associate Consultant: Accounting
Francis is the holder of a Bachelor of Business Management degree from Moi University and has fully completed his CPA studies.
Francis has over 8 years experience in accounting for various companies including Jumia and serving our clients in North America and Africa.
His work includes compiling the monthly data from clients and carrying out analysis to ensure that the monthly close is accurate and that the financial statements are audit ready. His work includes handling US sales taxes and 1099 forms, Kenyan tax administration and liaison with overseas auditors.
Francis likes playing football, reading and travelling.
Edward Kariuki
Position: Associate Consultant: Accounting
Edward is a veteran of over 30 years experience in accounting for a wide variety of organisations in Kenya and North America.
His work includes compiling the monthly data from clients and carrying out analysis to ensure that the monthly close is accurate and that the financial statements are audit ready. His work includes handling US sales taxes and 1099 forms, Kenyan tax administration and liaison with overseas auditors.
His clients have included a university, a large member organisation, a Canadian medical research institute and a solar equipment distributor in the US.
When he can, Edward likes to relax by swimming and playing badminton.
Fridah Mwendwa
Position: Associate Consultant: Accounting
Fridah is an experienced accountant who has completed her CPA studies and is currently studying for her business degree. She has sixteen years experience in accounting and audit for clients in Kenya and Ghana and is responsible for managing their monthly close, ensuring that clients receive audit ready financial statements, liaison with auditors and helping clients deal with administrative matters such as payroll management and processing of transactions in client accounts. She is also a seasoned professional in tax administration.
Caleb Musau
Position: Senior Associate. Information Technology.
Caleb is the holder of a B.Ed degree in Education Science from Kenyatta University and also holds Certificates in Business Continuity Management, (Continuity SA) and Capital Market Operations (University of Reading). He is a qualified SAP ERP Functional Consultant and a Microsoft Certified Professional (Active Directory).
Caleb has worked for over 20 years’ on technology strategy implementation, project management, business analysis, systems development, technology integration and implementation, technology due diligence, technology audit and assurance and capital market operations, among others.
He has been active in both private and public sectors in financial markets, hospitality, service, manufacturing and public (government institutions). He led a team of highly skilled individuals in driving Stock Exchange technology and market operations at the NSE. He has also worked with PKF Consulting and Zedesen Associates among others.
Caleb is passionate about mentoring young professionals, team capacity building and talent growth. As he puts it, he is “curious about finding practical cost effective use cases for emerging technologies such as distributed ledger, artificial intelligence and internet of things for small and medium sized enterprises.”
